thank you, apple, for weeding out the companies whose business model depends on selling my information to junk-mailers.

This is the kind of 'crazy-steve-jobs-control' i can live with.

    +1 :d

I'm sure this data will be coming to a Keynote near you.

The trend is your friend, and unless Apple can turn it around, the trend is clearly moving toward a marginalization of iOS.

The trend does not say what you think it says.

I don't think the person you are responding to was equating homosexuality with anything. If you've ever given blood, which I have many times, you would know that you have to fill out a form every time which asks you questions based on high-risk behaviors, including sex-for-money, intravenous drug use, and male-to-male sex. They are in no way equated.

Except that the question "male to male sex" is discriminatory. It doesn't ask you "received anal sex", it asks you about your sexual orientation. Plain and simple, discriminatory and non-scientific because male-to-female sex has the exact same risks.

The Financial Times didnt have this new revenue stream before Apple offered it to them. Why wouldnt apple share profits? To me its more about keeping companies away from data collecting on their prey...i mean peons... i mean customers.

And this is why HTML5 versions of these types of apps are coming. At which point it will become more clear that Apple did not really offer anything.

Well finally we might actually see decent image editing on the iPad. I can't imagine this being anywhere as great as Photoshop on a real computer anytime soon, but the iPad should be able to run something like Photoshop 7 or CS without any problems thanks to the CPU power and RAM it has. If they just made it touch sensitive somehow, or added stylus or external tablet support somehow, that would be awesome.

I doubt there really is the need for a totally rewritten app here, as it will lack 99% of the good features in Photoshop (Liquify, robust Type tool, Curves, etc...).

Tell him yourself, the little brat started this thread because he is mad at mommy and daddy.

The thread starter will have to wait 18 years and 9 months to figure out if he'll let his own brat sleep over.

This really hits a nerve with me. This example of Lotus notes which at one time was a new application which was NOT written to work well with BOTH Macs and DOStel PC's was a CHOICE. They wanted for a variety of reasons to deal with only one set of hardware even though there was deployed hardware in use with users who would at least in principal, need to be on their network.

As the years passed with Notes, they begrudgingly made some versions with limited Mac support, but always as a second class citizen to such a degree that unless you ran it on a DOStel PC or a Wintel PC an employer could not practicably talk with them to the drgree they needed to.

As a result of this and the fairly wide adoption of Notes for secure communication within several large enterprises, Macs were shut out.

Now that Notes is adding "more full" Mac support 20 years later, they will not be surprised to hear Mac users, and shops who respect Mac users have simply switched to something else.

Hopefully what will happen now is their captured markets will simply buy APPLE hardware to perform Dostel and Wintel PC functions under Parallels or Bootcamp or Q.

    It will be ritious.

I wonder how many of these posts are trolls? I haven't had any issues whatsoever with 4.3.1. I also didn't have any problems with 4.3; battery life has been absolutely stellar and call performance actually improved in 4.3.1.

The timing of all these "bitching" posts just seems suspicious.

What interface/app are you using to watch video and from what streaming source?

Give me specifics about codec and apps used and I can help you solve this issue no matter what video card you have.

Its only BBC iPlayer and TVcatchup.com. Youtube is better but still glitchy

I bet the next revision of the shuffle will be 2GB - and will remain the same form factor (if this proves popular). There currently are FLASH chips in 2GB capacity that would fit right into the new shuffle. The catch is the price... Market value on smaller 2GB chips is about 5X the price of 1GB chips right now. In other words, Apple could release a 2GB version of the G2 Shuffle, it would just cost about another $100 and there probably isn't sufficeint production yield of 2GB chips yet. But in it's new/current form, the small size and ~240 song capacity for about $80 makes it a real winner.

This post answers my question. So it would be reasonable that one year from now a 3G shuffle could be 2 gigglebytes (reduces confusion :) )

I would bet the Shuffle form factor would stay the same and the Nano, same thing. It is the 5G iPod which I think might see a form factor revision "next". I would think the 2G/3G Shuffle software could be upgraded fairly easily to have a doubletap change playlists as well.

Until the FT reverses route, the ONLY rational response is to either not buy the FT at all (there are competitors out there) or buy it at a news stand.
Where has been the outcry during the last 50 years during newspapers have used this for their subscribers?
So, the moment somebody offers a newspaper subscription that asks the user via a non-modal interface whether to share its data, you decide which newspaper you prefer on this basis. And if somebody had offered a newspaper which by default does not use your data (ie, requires you to check a box instead of unchecking) in the past you would have immediately switched to that newspaper?
Except that you naturally didn't do any of that (despite also naturally there being newspapers which by default do not use your data, eg, currently the The Economist).
All this grandstanding, just at the opportunity to use some strong words.

Makes me wonder how much more awesome iOS would be as a platform if Apple wouldn't try to artificially segment their product lines like this. :P

    Hi All,

First off I am new here, so Hi again

I have a small problem getting Microsoft Outlook 2001 to use my 2003 Exchange server. I have to admit I am new to macs and am finding it a little hard to do anything but I am trying.

From what I can tell is that for some reason my the mac will not resolve the server name to an ip address. I mean when I look in the Outlook settings, under services --> properties if I place the servers IP address there and then the user name and then 'check the name' it resolves the name of the server and under lines the user name (which as far as I am concerned has worked).

Yet when I then launch Outlook I get a message saying folders could not be opened. The attempt to log on to the server failed..... Microdoft Outlook could not be started. The attempt to log on to the MS Exchange Server failed....................

What I have done so far:-
Updated the /etc/hosts file and added the ip address for the server (can ping both IP and name from the console and network util)
When in Outlook settings --> properties and user the server name instead of the IP address and try and check name I get an error.. The name could not be resolved. Network problems are preventing connection to the MS Exchange Server, Contact your system adminsitrator (me).

Sorry for the long post but this is a real problem. Any help would be much appreciated.

    Ian

PS The only thing I can sort of think of at the moment is that Outlook starts I think in classic mode??? I am not sure if this starts a new shell and therefore ignores the /etc/hosts file and that is the reason why it can not resolve the server name. If I am right my next question would be where is the hosts file for the classic enviroment??

No you cannot, iMovie only sees FireWire cameras the built-in iSight is wired through USB.

EDIT: Im going to look into the resource files to see if I can get it to see USB cams.

I see TJ Maxx's acquisition of some iPads as a marketing scheme. If a few select stores have at least 5 to offer at a discounted price, imagine what kind of results they would get if they offered them as a Black Friday Doorbuster Special. They would probably get hundreds lined up at the door like Best Buy does for a deeply discounted HDTV or laptop. As for a warranty, I don't think they offer warranties on any of their products because they are a clearing house.

True. There's nothing wrong with that. SJ should be happy for selling 80 iPads in one transaction.

The buyer is free to give them away or sell them for less.

There's a remarkable amount of shortsightedness in this thread. But that's typical of the entire generic Wintel/PC world. No imagination. No ability to see possibilities as development of Post-PC era hardware continues. Or rather, iPad development.

I could use the Volt right about now......

The only electric cars I would consider are the Tesla and Fisker Karma. Personally, mpg does not enter my train of thought when purchasing a car. And it MUST growl when on the throttle ;-)

how about the bug where you download or update an app and it gets stuck at installing at the end and you have to restart the device
